How can a person be visually challenged or blind by birth , is it hereditary?

Most of the causes of inborn blindness are not genetic. They occur when a mother is suffering any severe disease. Due to these diseases, the eyes fail to develop. E.g., German measles can cause blindness in foetus.

However, there are many genetic diseases that result in the blindness in infants, adults and old people like congenital cataracts, congenital glaucoma, retinal degeneration, optic atrophy
