Question

How can a single mango plant produce different varieties of mangoes ?

Open in App
Solution

Plant breeding helps to produce a new hybrid variety by crossing two dissimilar varieties. It helps us to bring along the features of both the varieties in the single hybrid.
Now here we have a single mango plant available and have to produce different varieties in that single plant. The only option left with us is grafting and budding.
In grafting, the upper part (scion) of another plant (another variety) is attached to the rootstock of our plant. While budding is a process where bud of one plant (another variety) is attached to our plant. Both grafting and budding are asexual modes of reproduction and the upcoming growth will look exactly like the plant (another variety) from where we have taken the scion or the bud. More than one varieties can be attached in this way to the different branches of our plant to create a single mango plant with different varieties of mango.
