How can an aquarium be made into a self-sustaining unit like a natural ecosystem?
By adding more plants and animals.
An aquarium survives on dissolved oxygen and fishes form dominating organisms in this ecosystem. Each living component (fishes, plants, planktons, bacteria etc.) and non-living component (sand, water) in this man made ecosystem interact closely with each other.
An aquarium can be made self-sustained by adding more plants and animals in it which would help in recycling of certain substances like carbon dioxide, wastes etc. These substances would otherwise pollute the environment of the aquarium.
