how can an ear drum get damaged its function is only 2 vibrate

An ear drum separates outer ear from inner ear. When an infection occurs in ear, the pressure in middle ear builds up which pushes against the eardrum. When the pressure is increased further, it causes the eardrum to perforate thus damaging the eardrum.
