Biodegradable substances:

  1. Waste materials that can be broken down into simpler, non-toxic substances by microorganisms are called biodegradable substances.
  2. Examples: animal waste, waste from vegetables, cattle dung, etc.
  3. This waste undergoes degradation due to the action of enzymes or biocatalysts secreted by microbes and enters the biogeochemical cycles.

Reuse of biodegradable waste:

  1. When any biodegradable waste is degraded and mixed with soil it becomes available for the other plants to absorb.
  2. Biodegradable waste can be utilized as an excellent source of manure for plants by creating compost pits in houses, schools, hotels, etc.
  3. Vermicompost is ideal manure for growing plants.
  4. Cowdung can be effectively utilized as a source of Gobar gas
  5. Kitchen waste can be effectively utilized as a source of biogas
