Question

How can gases be liquefied by applying pressure and lowering temperature?

Open in App
Solution

Step 1:The change in pressure and temperature leads to a change in the physical state.

Step 2 : Explanation: 1. A gas is taken in a container. put a piston on it. 2. When pressure is applied to the piston, the gas particles present in the container come closer to each other.
This reduces the kinetic energy of the particles. 3. The particles are still quite far away from each other and are still in a gaseous state. 4. When pressure is increased further, the gas particles come so close together that they start
attracting each other, and consequently, the gas liquefied. 5. The lowering of temperature by cooling helps in liquefying the gas during compression. 6. High pressure, together with low temperature is generally used to liquefy gases.
