There are different ways in which infection caused by pathogens can be detected.
(i) Symptomatic diagnosis: Some signs are specifically indicative of a disease.
(ii) Microbial culture: It is the priniple method to diagnose infectious disease. A sample is taken from potentially diseased tissue or fluid and is then tested for presence of infectious disease.
(iii) Microscopy: Almost all cells stain with various dyes. Thus, it will help identify pathogen from a diseased tissue or fluid.
(iv) Biochemical tests: In this, metabolic or enzymatic products characteristic of a particular infectious agent is detected.
(v) Molecular diagnostics: One of the molecular diagnostic method is PCR.
