How can sound traverse form one place to another?
By a particle moving about its fixed position, and influencing the particle next to it to do the same, and passing the trend to subsequent particles.
Sound can also be passed through particles, where the particles don't move from one place to another. Instead, they just move about their position and influence the next particle to move. This passing on of sound from one particle to another, without the particle actually getting displaced from its fixed position, is generally referred to as a wave.
