Question

How can submarines and whales sink and rise to the water surface at their own will?

Open in App
Solution

The concept for submarines -

1. The submarines are equipped with water tanks which can be filled or emptied as per will.

2. For sinking inside the seawater, the tanks of submarines are filled with water that will satisfy the condition of the sinking of a body by making the average density greater than the density of the seawater.

3. For submarines to rise to the surface of the liquid, the water inside the tank is emptied and the average density becomes less than the seawater.

The concept for whales -

1. The whales can rise or sink in water with the help of an air bladder (an organ in the body of whales).

2. The air bladders are filled with air which makes the average density of whales lower than that of water and they rise to the surface.

3. The air bladders are emptied and they sink inside the liquid as this increases the average density of whales.

Hence, both submarines and whales can use the water tank and air bladder respectively to rise or sink in liquid.
