Solution
Transportation of water in plants:
The transport of water and minerals in plants is carried out by the xylem vessels.
Osmosis plays an important role in the movement of water and minerals upward from cell to cell through the cortex of the root.
Water and minerals are then brought to the xylem from the cortex.
The sap containing water and dissolved minerals move upwards from the root cells to the xylem, this upward movement of sap is called the ascent of sap.
Root pressure is that force that helps to drive fluids upward into the water-conducting vessels (xylem) due to osmotic pressure in the root cells.
Transpiration pull is said to be a suction force used to draw the water in an upward direction from the roots towards the leaves.
The capillary action and the transpiration pull are mostly responsible for the transport of water to greater heights.
