Waste materials that can be broken down into simpler, non-toxic substances by micro-organisms are called biodegradable substances.
Example: animal waste, waste from vegetables, cattle dung, sewage, agricultural residues etc.
These waste materials can be effectively decomposed and used to produce compost by digging compost pits or installing vermicompost plants in houses and schools.
Cattle dung can be used in producing gobar gas.
2. Non-biodegradable substances:
Waste materials that cannot be broken down into simpler, non-toxic substances by micro-organisms easily are called non-biodegradable substances
Example: plastic, iron, aluminum foil, glass, etc.
Incineration: Burning at high temperatures (850 degrees Celsius)
Recycling: items like paper and plastic can be recycled.
Avoid the use of non-biodegradable items and choose eco-friendly alternatives.
