Based on the excretory products, organisms can be classified into 3 major groups:
1. Ammonetelic: The organism, in this case excretes ammonia as the major excretory product. The process of elimination of ammonia is known as ammonotelism. e.g. annelidans, molluscans, bony fishes etc.
2. Ureotelic: The major excretory product of ureotelic organism is urea and the process of excretion of urea is known as ureotelism. e.g. adult amphibians, mammals etc.
3. Uricotelic animals: The organisms which excrete uric acid as their major excreta are called uricotelic. The process of excreting uric acid is called uricotelism. E.g. it is seen in reptiles, birds, insects etc.
