For immunisation against tetanus a tetanus vaccine in the form of tetanus toxoid (TT) is given. It is a form of passive immunisation in which a dead or weakened version of the toxin is introduced into the body so that the body generates antibodies against the antigen generated by the bacterial toxin. This is helpful because if in the future there is any further attack of the bacteria then the immune system recognizes the antigen and generates antibodies more rapidly. This vaccine is given in the form of five doses during childhood, with a sixth dose given during adolescence.
