Question

How can we obtain the coloured component (dye) from ink?

Open in App
Solution

We can separate the dye from the ink by the process of evaporation.

Ink is a mixture of a dye in water and hence the volatile solvent (water) can be separated from its non-volatile solute( dye) in the container by the method of evaporation.

Coloured component (dye) from ink can be separated by following the procedure given below:

  • Take a watch glass with some ink in it
  • Now take a beaker with water
  • Place a watch glass on the mouth of the beaker
  • Now start heating the beaker.
  • When the beaker gets heated, the ink in the watch glass on the beaker also get heated.
  • Evaporation starts taking place from the watch glass.
  • Continue heating as the evaporation goes on and stop heating when you do not see any further change on the watch glass.
  • We see that water in ink gets evaporated
  • However, dye remain as residue on watch glass.
