Solution

Topsoil:

  1. The uppermost layer of soil is known as topsoil.
  2. Soil is composed of loose sediment broken rocks, mineral particles, remains of dead animals, etc.
  3. Topsoil is composed of litter (organic waste), humus (decaying organic matter), and small plant roots.
  4. Topsoil is erased as it gets loose.
  5. Running of water due to rainfall can also lead to loosening of topsoil.

The following ways can be used to prevent the loss of topsoil:

  1. The cutting down of trees (deforestation) should be stopped as the roots of trees tend to hold the soil together.
  2. The vegetational cover should be increased to prevent the loss of topsoil.
  3. Large plantations should be increased to prevent the loss of topsoil.
  4. Excessive grazing of grass by the herbivores should be prevented as it leads to loss of topsoil.
