Solution

  1. Fungi lack chlorophyll and do not engage in photosynthesis. Plants engage in photosynthesis which produces glucose from carbon dioxide and sunlight. A byproduct of photosynthesis is oxygen which is used by humans and other animals to breath. Plants are autotrophs, meaning they produce their own food. Fungi are heterotrophs and must rely on other organisms to support themselves. Fungi are either decomposers or parasites. Decomposers obtain their nutrients from dead biologic material. The decomposers are important for recycling biologic materials in the environment. Certain fungi are parasites such as the fungus that causes athlete’s foot.
  2. Plants have cellulose in their cell walls. Fungi have chitin in their cell walls.
  3. Fungi lack true roots and instead have hyphae.
  4. Fungi have no chlorophyll whereas plants do.
  5. Fungi have no embryo stage whereas plants do.
  6. Fungi store glycogen as energy reserve, as animals do. Plants store starch.
