Question

How can we say that refractive index of red is less than violet

Open in App
Solution

R e f r a c t i v e space i n d e x space equals fraction numerator s p e e d space o f space l i g h t space i n space a i r over denominator s p e e d space o f space l i g h t space i n space m e d i u m end fraction n space equals c over v

Also

v = f × lambda

v- velocity
f - frequency
lambda - wavelength

That is refractive index is inversely proportional to v and also wavelength lambda.

Hence as wavelength of red is more than violet
Therefore refractive index of red is less than that of violet.
