Question

how can we separate a mixture of naphthalene and ammonium chloride? explain with a labelled diagram

Open in App
Solution

As both are sublimable substances, they cannot be separated by sublimation method but they can be separated by fractional crystallisation.
In fractional crystallisation method choose a solvent so that one substance get soluble and other is not soluble in that. Here we are choosing an organic solvent ethanol to dissolve naphthalene in which ammonium chloride does not dissolve. By evaporating the solvent crystals of naphthalene is separated.
