Filtration is a method for separating an insoluble solid from a liquid.

In filtration we filter the solids from fluids by incorporating a medium via which liquids can only pass. The fluid that passes through it is called filtrate and the solid left behind is called residue.


For example: When a mixture of sand and water is filtered, the sand stays in the filter paper (residue) while the water passes through the filter paper and gets collected below.
