Solution

Elements-

  • It is a substance that is made of same kind of atoms.
  • It is a pure substance.
  • It may occur naturally or may be prepared artificially.
  • They exist in all three physical states.
  • Element in solid-state- Gold, silver, iron, copper, lead, aluminum, zinc, sodium, carbon, etc.
  • Element in a liquid state- mercury and bromine.
  • Element in a gaseous state- oxygen, neon, nitrogen, hydrogen, chlorine, fluorine, etc.

Classification of elements-

They are classified into four main groups:

Metals-

  • They are solid at room temperature. except for mercury.
  • Lustrous- they have a shiny surface.
  • Ductile- they can be drawn into wire.
  • Malleable- they can be hammered or rolled into thin sheets.
  • They are good conductors of heat and electricity.
  • Example- Sodium, magnesium, calcium, copper, gold, etc.

Non-metals-

  • They are generally liquid and gases at room temperature. except for carbon.
  • Lustrous- they don't have a shiny surface.
  • Non- Ductile- they can't be drawn into wire.
  • Non-Malleable- they can't be hammered or rolled into thin sheets.
  • They are poor conductors of heat and electricity.
  • Example- Hydrogen, oxygen, chlorine, solid sulfur solid carbon, etc.

Metalloids-

  • They are also known as semi metals.
  • They are a group of metals that lie between metals and non-metals.
  • They show the properties of metals and non-metals.
  • Example- Arsenic, Boron, silicon, etc.

Nobel gas

  • They are also called inert gas.
  • They do not react with other elements.
  • They are stable.
  • Example- helium, neon, argon, etc.
