To demonstrate the process of atmospheric pressure experimentally, the following procedure can be followed :
1. A metallic can is taken and filled with water.
2. Its lid is removed and the can is heated.
3. The water starts boiling and steam starts coming out from the mouth of the can.
4. The steam forces out most of the air from the can.
5. The can is closed with an air-tight lid.
6. Cold water is added to the can and it starts crashing.
Explanation: When the can is heated and covered with a lid, the can becomes filled with hot air (steam). On pouring cold water, it condenses to a liquid and thus a partial vacuum is created inside the can. Thus, the atmospheric pressure becomes more than the internal pressure due to which the can is crushed.
