Question

How can you make an electromagnet using an iron bar?

Open in App
Solution

  1. Take an iron bar and wound a copper wire around it such that a coil with many loops is formed around the iron bar.
  2. Connect one terminal of the wire with a battery and the other terminal with a key.
  3. As soon as the current flows through the copper wire by connecting the key, the iron bar starts behaving like a magnet.
  4. If iron filings are placed near the iron bar, they get attracted towards the bar and this verifies that the bar has become a magnet.
  5. More the current flowing through the copper wire, the more will be the magnetic strength of the iron bar and vice versa.
  6. More the number of turns in the copper wire, the more will be the strength of the magnetic field produced and vice versa.
  7. Below is the diagram showing various components used in the making of an electromagnet.
