Question

How can you name chemical compounds from their formula in the following cases? Give examples in support of your answer

(ii) if the compound contains two non-metals only

Solution

  1. Molecular compounds, formed by the combination of two different non-metals, are written in such a way that the less electronegative element is written on the left-hand side, while the more electronegative element is written on the right-hand side.
  2. In naming molecular compounds, the name of the less electronegative non-metal is written as such but the name of the more electronegative element
is changed to have the ending ‘ide’.

Example:

  • Compound formed by hydrogen nonmetal(less electronegative) and sulfur nonmetal(more electronegative) is named hydrogen sulphide.
  • Compound formed by hydrogen nonmetal(less electronegative) and chlorine nonmetal(more electronegative) is named hydrogen chloride.
