Open in App
Solution

Corrosion:

Corrosion can be defined as the slow destruction of metals due to air and water causing the formation of oxide and hydroxides respectively.

For example, rusting of iron.

4Fes+3O2g+6H2Ol4FeOH3s

Iron oxygen water Iron(III)hydroxide

Due to corrosion, iron will get oxidized to iron oxide.

Prevention

  1. By coating the metal surface using paint, grease, varnish, or oil.
  2. By the technique of electroplating, i.e., covering the metal using another metal that is less reactive or will not be corroded.

For example, chromium is coated over brass.
