How can you say that the Northern Plains have diverse relief features?
Answer:
The Northern Plains have diverse relief features. The Northern plains can be divided into four regions according to the variations in relief features.
Pebbles are deposited in a narrow belt of about 8 Km to 16 Km width. These pebbles are deposited by the rivers descending from the Himalayas. This deposition of pebbles which lie parallel to the Shiwaliks are known as bhabar. This is the belt where all the streams disappear.
Terai is a marshy, swampy and wet region. This region lies to the south of bhabar belt. This wet, marshy area is created by the rivers and streams which re-emerge in this region. This region was full of wildlife and a thickly forested region. However, these forests were cleared for settling migrants who came to India after partition. These forests were cleared to create agricultural land.
Older Alluvium forms the largest part of the Northern Plains. They present a terrace like feature and they lie above the flood plains of the rivers. This region is known as the bhangar. Kankar is the locally known soil in this region which contains calcareous deposits. Khadar is the younger and newer deposits of the flood plains. They are ideal for intensive agriculture. This soil is very fertile as they get renewed every year.
