Question
How can you separate kerosene and water?
Open in App
Solution
Kerosene and water form immiscible liquids.
Immiscible liquids
do not mix with each other.
We can separate kerosene and water by an apparatus called a separating funnel.
The technique of separation:
The immiscible liquid, kerosene and water are taken in a separating funnel.
The immiscible liquid forms two clear layers.
The lighter liquid that is kerosene forms the upper layer and the heavier liquid that is water forms the lower layer.
When the stopper of the funnel is opened gradually the water comes out first and is collected in a beaker.
When the lower layer is shipped completely, the stopper of the funnel is closed.
Due to this, the lighter liquid (kerosene) is left in the separating funnel.
