Question

How can you separate kerosene and water?

Open in App
Solution

  • Kerosene and water form immiscible liquids.
  • Immiscible liquids do not mix with each other.
  • We can separate kerosene and water by an apparatus called a separating funnel.

The technique of separation:

  • The immiscible liquid, kerosene and water are taken in a separating funnel.
  • The immiscible liquid forms two clear layers.
  • The lighter liquid that is kerosene forms the upper layer and the heavier liquid that is water forms the lower layer.
  • When the stopper of the funnel is opened gradually the water comes out first and is collected in a beaker.
  • When the lower layer is shipped completely, the stopper of the funnel is closed.
  • Due to this, the lighter liquid (kerosene) is left in the separating funnel.
