The sex of the child is determined by the chromosomes of the parents. In human, XY system of chromosomes is followed. XY contributing to Male and XX to female. Haploid gametes are formed by the meiosis of chromosomes. The sperm would have either X or Y chromosome and egg would have an X chromosome. The fusion of X of male and X of female will give XX (female) of the child and Y of Male and X of female will give XY(male).
