how did abolition of slavery became possible in france .explain

Open in App
Solution

Inspired by the ideals of liberty, equality and fraternity, the French First Republic, under the leadership of Robespierre, abolished slavery in France and its colonies in 1794. This led to widespread opposition by slave owners in French colonies like Haiti. They threatened to transfer the control of the French colonies to British control since Britain still allowed slavery in its colonies. Fearing that these colonies will secede, Napoleon reestablished slavery in the French colonies in 1802. This led to slave revolutions in Haiti which lead to Haitian independence. It was finally only in 1848, under the Second Republic, that slavery was finally abolished in all French controlled territories.
