Question

How does Darwin explain the survival of fittest and natural selection theory?

Open in App
Solution

Survival of the fittest:

The survival of the fittest theory was put forward by Charles Darwin and he suggested that the organisms best adapted to the environment are more likely to survive and reproduce.

Natural selection:

  1. It is a key feature of evolution that was proposed by Charles Darwin.
  2. It is the process in which the organisms more suited for the changing environment tend to survive better and reproduce.
  3. The genes that aided in the adaptations are passed onto the subsequent generation and cause the species to diverge.
  4. An example of this phenomenon can be observed in peacocks. In peacocks, the females choose their mate based on the appearance of the male's tail.
  5. Male birds with large, bright tails are picked, and thus over time,
  6. it has become rare to find male peacocks with dull feathers. This phenotype has been passed down the generations.
