The French did not favour mass education of the Vietnamese due to fear of French citizens losing their jobs. But as the number of Vietnamese teachers grew, they did not blindly follow the curriculum which glorified the colonial rulers. Students opposed the government’s efforts to prevent them from getting higher-level jobs. The youth started political parties like the Party of Young Annam and started newspapers and journals to spread their idea of nationalism. The revolution in China motivated some of the students to stand up against colonial rule. They flew to France, Russia, Japan and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics to get modern education.
