Dear Student
Olympe de Gouges was one of the most important politically active woman in France who took stand for equal rights and opportunity for women. She protested against the Constitution and Declaration of Man and Citizen as they excluded women from fundamental and basic rights in society.
In 1791, she herself wrote the Declaration of Woman and Citizen, which she addressed to the queen and to the National Assembly.
In 1793, she criticised Jacobin government for forcibly closing the women's club. Later on she was tried by National Convention for treason and was executed.
She declared that "Woman is born free and remains equal to man. The goal of all political associations is preservation of rights of women and man equally. No woman is exception before law and order. All female and male are equally entitled to all honours and public employment. The source of sovereignty of a nation is union of male and female."
