How did people in Jaisalmer conserve water in olden days?

Open in App
Solution

Johads:

  1. Johads were earthen check dams created during the old days in Jaisalmer.
  2. They were created to overcome the problems of water scarcity in Jaisalmer due to extremely low rainfall in the region.
  3. These were built where three sides were elevated and soil was removed to create a deeper man-made dam and using the same soil the fourth wall of the johads were built.
  4. Rainwater was stored in the johads and the groundwater used to fill these dams as well.
  5. Same idea was followed while creating stepwells.
