How did society help in the education of the students?

No fee was charged from any student as knowledge was considered sacred in those days. The society instead contributed in other ways. Some financial support came from rich merchants, wealthy parents and society. Apart from gifts of buildings, the universities received land as gifts. Agraharas in the South were maintained by generous donations from the society.
