How did the Cholas rise to power
Vijayalaya established the Chola Empire. By conquering the Pallavas, he took over the Tanjore kingdom in the eighth century and contributed to the emergence of the great Cholas. Tanjore was thus designated as the Chola Empire’s initial capital. Aditya I took the throne of the empire after Vijayalaya died.
Cholas served as subordinates to the Pallava monarchs of Kanchipuram, and they were predominantly members of the Mutharaiyar dynasty, which ruled over the Kaveri delta. He went on to conquer neighbouring areas, deposing the Pallava and Pandaya monarchs and creating the Chola monarchy.
