Dear Student,

a. Earlier,Peasants cultivated open fields which were strips of land near their villages.
These strips of land were allotted to the villager in a public meeting and varied in quality.

b. All villagers had a mix of good and bad quality of land.

c. Land was not partitioned into enclosures or owned by private landlords.

d.. However, increase in the population, industrialization, urbanization and the subsequent increase in demand for food production brought about changes.In the early 18th century , farmers started enclosing land which were driven to increase grain production to meet the rising needs of the society.

e.This encouraged landowners to enclose lands and enlarge the area under grain cultivation.

f. Enclosures allowed landowners to expand the land under their control and produce more for the market.

g. Innovation in the agriculture further contributed in expanding production.

h. However, The poor no longer had access to the commons. They were displaced from their lands and found their customary rights disappearing.

i. The introduction of threshing machines reduced the dependence of the labourers and rendered them unemployed.
