How did the English language play a leading role in the growth of Nationalism in India?

The spread of the English language in all parts of India gave to the educated Indians a common language, in which they could communicate with one another. In the absence of such a common language it would have been very difficult for the Indians speaking in different languages to come on a common platform and to organise a movement of an all-India character.
