a. British took repressive measures to suppress the revolt
b. They rather used all their strength to fight retaliate and called many reinforcements from Britain to outnumber the rebels
c. British also passed new laws to convict the rebel and and then gradually controlled the main centres of the Revolt
d. They arrested Bahadur Shah Zafar and his wife Begum Zinat Mahal.
e. He was tried in a court and imprisoned in Rangoon.
f. The British also killed his sons.
g. Bahadur Shah later died in Rangoon jail in the year 1862.
Impact:
i. Bahadur Shah after being proclaimed as the emperor of India blessed the rebels and wrote letters to all the chiefs and rulers of the country , asking them to organise and act in unison against the British.
ii. Most smaller rulers and chieftains agreed to join since they were threatened by the expansion of British rule.
iii. They believed that they would be able to assert their autonomy and authority again, if the Mughal emperor rules again.
iv. It certainly infused new energy and confidence among the rebels .
v. It further gave them encouragement to take on the British with courage and hope.
