How did the scientists conclude that the cathode rays were composed of negatively charged particles?

​Cathode rays travelled from negative to positive electrode. We know that opposite attracts, so the cathode rays must be negative in order to get attracted by the positive electrode.
Hence, the conclusion was made that cathode rays are negative.
