Belgium has many ethnic variations. It had been a monarchy. But, with successive political reforms it became a federal state.Changes were brought in the 1993 constitutional revisions. This was in recognition of growing discontent and brewing civil war among the ethnic groups. The government became federal to allow representation of various communities.
