Question

How does digestion occur in the stomach?

Open in App
Solution

Digestion:

Digestion is the process of metabolizing large food molecules into simpler forms that can be absorbed by the cells for nutrition.

Digestion in Stomach:

  1. While the food enters the stomach, salivary amylase is still acting on the food particles.
  2. The food particles are then softened to form the chyme.
  3. Lipase acts on the food particles and breaks down complex fat molecules into simple fatty acids and monoglycerides.
  4. The breakdown of protein is initiated by the actions of hydrochloric acid and pepsin.
  5. The partly digested food molecules are then transported to the duodenum for further digestion.
