Question

How do acids and bases react with metals?

Open in App
Solution

Acids and bases react vigorously with metals to form a salt and liberate hydrogen gas.

Example: Reaction between Zinc and Hydrochloric acid

  • Generally, a metal that is more reactive than acid displaces hydrogen from acid leading to the formation of salt with the evolution of hydrogen gas.
  • Zinc(Zn) reacts with hydrochloric acid(HCl) leading to the formation of zinc chloride(ZnCl2) and hydrogen gas(H2).

Zn(s)+2HCl(aq)ZnCl2(aq)+H2(g)

Example: Reaction between Zinc and Sodium hydroxide in presence of water

  • Zinc reacts with Sodium hydroxide(NaOH) in presence of water(H2O) to form sodium zincate(Na2Zn(OH)4) along with the evolution of hydrogen gas.

Zn(s)+2NaOH(aq)+2H2O(l)Na2Zn(OH)4(aq)+H2(g)
