Reproduction in ascomycetes:

  1. Ascomycetes belong to the fungi kingdom.
  2. Their scientific name is Ascomycota.
  3. They undergo two modes of reproduction.

Sexual reproduction in ascomycetes:

  1. They produce ascospores which help in sexual reproduction.
  2. They produce spores inside special elongated sacs known as asci or ascus.
  3. The male ascomycete produces antheridium and the female ascomycete produces an ascogonium.
  4. The fertilization process forms asci which develop into a new organism.

Asexual reproduction in ascomycetes:

  1. Ascomycetes also reproduce asexually via forming conidia.
  2. They form structures known as conidiophores.
  3. They release conidiospores.
  4. Conidiospores are haploid (n ) spores.
  5. Upon favorable conditions the spores mature into a mycelium (fungal threads or hyphae).
