Butterfly:

  2. They mainly act as pollinating agents.

Butterflies as pollinating agents:

  1. Butterflies form a group of biotic animals that help in the process of pollination.
  2. They are the key pollinators.
  3. They sit on the flowers to suck their nectar meanwhile the pollen grains stick to their body surface, when they go and sit on another flower the pollen grains get transferred to that flower, and thus, pollination takes place.

Butterflies as a component of the food chain:

  1. Butterflies maintain the environmental balance by participating in the food chain and food web formation.
  2. They are the major source of food for many birds, bats, and other animals.

That's how butterflies contribute to the maintenance of the ecosystem, by acting as pollinating agents and participating in the food web.
