Question

How do decomposers convert complex organic matter to simple inorganic matter

Open in App
Solution

Dear student,

Deomposers are microorganisms which breakdown the organic matter such as plant, animal waste and dead organisms. They are not visible through naked eyes. Mainly fungi and bacteria are part of this group such as saprotroph and nitrifying bacteria respectively. They chemically breakdown the complex organic matter into simple inorganic matter which is absorbed by plants. They return the nutrients to the ecosystem. In this process, the waste material or dead organisms are broken down into water, carbon dioxide, nutrients and other substances. Saprophytes which are fungi, decompose the dead and decaying matter whereas nitrifying bacteria such as nitrobacter performs nitrification in which nitrogen is oxidised to nitrates and nitrites.
