The directive principles are guidelines given to Central and State governments by the Constitution. These principles should be kept in mind while framing laws and policies.
While these principles are not enforceable by any court, they are considered fundamental in the governance of the country. Hence, it is regarded as the duty of the state to uphold these principles in making any law as they have been held important by the Constitution for establishing a just society. We can, therefore, assess the performance of the government by considering how far its laws and actions are consistent with the directive principles.
