Question

How do ectothermic organisms regulate their body temperature?

Open in App
Solution

Ectotherms are animals that do not have any internal heat regulating mechanism and thus, regulation of the body temperature mainly depends on external sources.
The body temperature of these animals fluctuates according to the temperature of their surroundings and hence these animals are also called cold blooded animals.
In order to protect themselves from the extreme temperature conditions, organisms go into a state of inactivity or low metabolic process like hibernation and aestivation.
Organisms like bears hibernate or winter sleep in extreme cold conditions and some organisms like snails aestivate or goes under summer sleep in hot conditions.
