How do I add a whole number with a fraction?

Open in App
Solution

Add a whole number with a fraction:

Whole number:

All positive numbers that do not contain any fractions or decimal points are referred to as whole numbers.

Example: 0,1,2,3,4,5..

Fraction:

A fraction is a part of a whole number, and a way to split up a number into two parts.

Example: 42,35,93,17...

The steps involved while adding a whole number with a fraction are:

  1. By taking 1 as the denominator, convert the whole number into a fraction.
  2. Make the denominators of both fractions equal by multiplying both the numerator and denominator of the whole number with a common integer.
  3. Then add the numerators of the two fractions.

For example: 4+12

Step-1: Take 1 as the denominator for the whole number:

4+12=41+12

Step-2: Make the denominators of both fractions equal:

Multiply both numerator and denominator of the whole number with a common integer 22:

4+12=4×21×2+12=82+12=92

Hence, in order to add a fraction with a whole number modify the whole number into a fraction, make the denominator common, then add the two numerators.
