Question

How do I know if a Molecule is Polar or Nonpolar ?

Open in App
Solution

  • Polarity is important because it decides whether molecule is hydrophilic or hydrophobic (from Greek for water-loving) from the Greek for water-fearing or water-averse.
  • High polarity molecules are hydrophilic, and they interact well with other polar materials such as water.
  • Water (H2O) is an example of a polar molecule. since on one hand, it has a slight positive charge and on the other, a slight negative charge.
  • The dipoles, resulting in a net dipole, do not cancel out. Other polar molecules are normally able to dissolve in water due to the polar structure of the water molecule itself.
