Question

How do invasive alien species affect biodiversity?

Open in App
Solution

Biodiversity:

  1. Each ecosystem has a unique biodiversity. Its population is perfectly balanced with prey, predators, environmental conditions, etc.
  2. When a foreign species or alien species is introduced to an ecosystem, it upsets the ecological interaction of other organisms.
  3. Alien species invasion is the major cause of biodiversity loss.
  4. They reproduce rapidly and compete with native species for food, water, and space.
  5. They cause the decline or extinction of indigenous species. E.g. Nile perch, Parthenium, Eicchornia, African catfish Clarias gariepinus, Lantana, etc.

Therefore alien invasion causes biodiversity loss.
