Hormones produced by the kidney:

  2. The kidney is responsible for two main hormones - renin and erythropoietin.
  3. Renin is the hormone produced by the kidneys for the RAAS system (Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone system) is produced by juxtaglomerular apparatus.
  4. Its main function is to activate Angiotensin, thereby activating the RAAS system.
  5. This system eventually leads balancing the electrolyte and fluid levels.
  6. Hence, it helps in maintaining blood pressure.
  7. Erythropoietin is another hormone that is responsible for production of red blood cells secreted by interstitial cells.
  8. It is released from the kidney and it acts on the bone marrow.
